Today we’re setting sail on the high seas of plastic bricks with the JMBrickLayer Ghost Ship The Flying Dutchman 40001 model. This ghostly galleon promises an immersive build and an illuminated centerpiece for any pirate enthusiast. But is it smooth sailing or a shipwreck waiting to happen? Let’s hoist the review flag and find out!
Unboxing the Treasure
First impressions are important, and Jmbricklayer gets a gold star here. The 1100+ pieces come neatly sorted into 4 sections (multiple bags per section). The instruction manual is detailed and clear, with each step helpfully highlighted in red.
Building a Legend
The ship itself is a faithful recreation of the Flying Dutchman from Pirates of the Caribbean. Three masts hold fabric sails featuring Davy Jones’ creepy mug, while rows of green cannons and a menacing fanged maw complete the spooky aesthetic. The generous use of green bricks, both solid and neon, emphasizes the ghostly and seaweed-covered nature of the ship.
The star of the show, however, is the integrated LED lighting system. It casts an eerie green glow, perfect for setting an appropriately spooky ambiance. The only downside is the reliance on a USB port for power. A battery pack option would have been more convenient.
Construction Woes and Wins
The build process is generally smooth sailing, thanks to the clear instructions. However, a minor hiccup near the end might have you walking the plank (metaphorically, of course). The lower deck’s foundation can be a bit unsteady for constructing the upper levels. Additionally, a longer USB cable or a battery pack option would be highly appreciated.
On the positive side, the brick quality is excellent, with a satisfyingly snug fit. The price point is also attractive, offering good value for the number of pieces. The exterior details and overall design are top-notch, with the LED lights taking the cake (or should we say, the kraken?).
Our Verdict:
The Jmbricklayer Glowing Pirate Ship is a thoroughly enjoyable build. The finished product is a conversation starter and a must-have for any Pirate Captain. While there are a couple of minor quibbles, the overall experience is a treasure trove of fun. Just be sure to secure a USB outlet or invest in a separate power source before you set sail!
