Design & Build
The Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless headset features a beautiful black design and sharp angles. It has a soft, ski-goggle headband which can be easily adjusted to different head sizes and offers a very comfortable fit for hours without experiencing irritation or pain.
The headband frame is made of lightweight aluminum, which gives the it a premium feel. The rest of the headset is made of high-quality matte plastic which blends in well with the overall design and feel.
There are very few buttons on the HS80 RGB Wireless and there are located on the left earcup – a volume slider and power button, an LED indicator and a USB-C port for charging.
The microphone is also on the left side of the headset and has a flat design. However, the microphone is fixed and cannot be detached – it can only be folded up or down. At the end of the microphone is a small led light that notifies in two colors: white if it is active or red if muted.
The plush memory foam cloth fabric on the earcups are pretty comfortable and durable unlike synthetic leather, which wears and peels over time. It also allows for better airflow to and from your ears. In terms of build quality, the HS80 RGB Wireless is a sturdy headset, it feels solid and is comfortable at the same time. The choice of materials makes headset feel premium.
The included USB dongle has a sleek finish and features an LED indicator that lights up when plugged in.
Performance & Audio Quality
With the included 2.4GHz USB Type-A wireless dongle, Corsair has focused on achieving comfort without the clutter of cables, while still achieving the best possible performance and so there are no 3.5mm cables or a Bluetooth mode. It can be also charged and used with the included USB-C to USB-A cable.
In terms of audio quality, two high-quality neodymium 50 mm drivers are responsible for the audio conversion, which according to Corsair, covers a frequency range from 20Hz to 40kHz. The headphones have an impedance of 32 ohms and a sensitivity of 109 decibels
The HS80 is optimized for Dolby Atmos Audio. Once you install the Dolby Access software, it automatically recognizes the headset and activates the full version of the software. The digital surround effect is really clear when you listen to Dolby Atmos content.
Both wireless and wired modes achieve good sound quality. On wireless mode you can enjoy 24-bit 48 kHz audio, and on wired mode 24-bit 96 kHz. However, we couldn’t find much difference here.
The bass is powerful, the lows and the mids blend everything together. The sound in general is powerful and without distortion even on high volume. High frequencies are heard clearly, which is also true for mids. For games and music, the difference is clearly noticeable. Voice dialogues are crisp and we were able distinguish sounds coming in from different directions with perfect accuracy.
Microphone
The available microphone is an omnidirectional one and has a frequency response from 100Hz to 10kHz. The microphone/recording quality is clean but is very sensitive to external noise.
Range
Corsair advertises a wireless range of up to 60 ft. In our test, the range and the quality has been optimal even up to 40-50 ft with a couple of walls in between.
Software & Features
Lighting, equalizer and headset settings can be adjusted via the iCUE software which can be downloaded from Corsair’s website. You can also sync all your iCUE supported peripherals using the same software. However, once Dolby Access is enabled, you will no longer be able to adjust equalizer settings from the iCUE software but can be done so from Dolby Access.
A notable feature is that you can use the included USB-A dongle to pair up to three Slipstream supported devices wirelessly. The iCUE software allows adding the battery status to the Windows taskbar, something very useful to monitor the remaining battery time.
Battery Life
The battery life is approximately 18-20 hours on a fully charged battery, which is respectable. It is also possible to use the headset wired and charge the battery at the same time. Charging back the Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless headphones takes about an hour.
The iCUE software allows adding the battery status to the Windows taskbar, something very useful to monitor the remaining battery time.
