Nothing has done it again. With the Phone (3a), the brand proves you don’t need to spend flagship money to get a phone that’s stylish, powerful, and packed with personality. Priced at just 999 AED, the 3a refines last year’s 2a with upgrades like a telephoto camera, faster chipset, and improved design—all while keeping Nothing’s signature quirks intact.
Design & Build: Still the Coolest Phone in the Room
Nothing’s transparent-back design remains a head-turner. The 3a swaps last year’s plastic for glass (finally!), giving it a more premium feel, and the IP64 rating now offers better dust and splash resistance. The Glyph LEDs on the back are as fun as ever, pulsing for notifications, doubling as a fill light for photos, and syncing with ringtones.

But the big new hardware addition is the Essential Key—a programmable button below the power key. A single press takes a screenshot, a long press records a voice memo, and a double press opens Essential Space, a hub for your notes and reminders. It’s a neat idea, though its placement means we often hit it accidentally.
Display & Audio: Big, Bright, and Smooth
The 3a’s 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED is a joy to use. Colors pop, brightness hits 1,300 nits in auto mode (great for outdoors), and the 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling buttery. We just wish Netflix supported HDR playback—hopefully a future update fixes this.

The stereo speakers are loud and clear, with decent bass for a phone this price. And while the under-display fingerprint sensor is fast, its low placement is awkward for smaller hands.
Performance: Good, But Not a Giant Leap
Powered by a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, the 3a handles daily tasks and gaming smoothly. In benchmarks, it trades blows with rivals like the Poco F6, though heavy gamers might want something with a Dimensity 8300 or Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

Thermals are impressive—even after an hour of Genshin Impact, the phone stays cool. Storage is UFS 2.2 (not 3.1), but with Nothing OS 3.1 on top of Android 15, the software is clean, customizable, and bloat-free. Nothing promises 3 Android updates and 6 years of security patches—solid for a mid-ranger.
Cameras: A Mixed Bag
The 3a’s triple-camera setup includes:
- 50MP main (sharp, great dynamic range)
- 50MP 2x telephoto (the star—excellent portraits and zoom)
- 8MP ultrawide (a downgrade from the 2a’s 50MP sensor)
Daylight photos from the main and telephoto cameras are excellent, with natural colors and good detail. The 2x zoom is surprisingly usable, and low-light performance is decent (though the ultrawide struggles at night).

But there are quirks:
- The main camera sometimes blows out highlights.
- The ultrawide can’t shoot 4K video (only 1080p).
- Selfies are good but oversharpened.
Nothing’s software updates usually improve cameras, so we’re hopeful.
Battery & Charging: All-Day Stamina
The 5,000mAh battery easily lasts a full day, even with heavy use. 50W charging (no charger in-box) gets you to 60% in 30 minutes, but rivals like Realme offer faster speeds.

Verdict: The Mid-Range King?
The Nothing Phone (3a) is a testament to how far mid-range smartphones have come. It delivers premium design, capable performance, and a surprisingly good camera system, all while undercutting flagship prices by a significant margin. But is it the best phone in its category? – the ultrawide camera is weak, the Essential Key feels gimmicky, and IP64 isn’t flagship-level. But for the price, it’s one of the most balanced phones you can buy.
