Design
The Epson EF-21 comes in two attractive finishes: warm white and smoke-ice green, making it a stylish addition to any living space. Its compact size allows it to blend seamlessly into various interiors, whether placed in a modern living room or a cozy bedroom. The build features a small adjustable leg at the front, offering limited tilt adjustments, which worked adequately during our testing on a coffee table with a 100-inch screen. For more precise placement, the universal mounting hole allows for tripod compatibility.
Weighing just 2.3 kg, the EF-21 is easy to carry around, making it ideal for on-the-go use. However, its lack of a built-in battery means it requires a power source, limiting its true portability. During operation, the projector runs quietly, and its matte metallic finish (available in three colors) adds to its overall aesthetic appeal.
While it’s not whisper-quiet, the fan noise didn’t distract us during use, especially with content playing through its dual 5W Dolby Audio speakers. These speakers performed well at mid to high volumes, but pushing them to their limits resulted in some distortion. For better sound quality, the HDMI ARC port can be used to connect a soundbar, although it lacks eARC support for advanced features like Dolby Atmos.
The rear of the projector houses an HDMI port (with ARC), a 3.5mm audio jack, and a USB-A port. While a USB-C port would have been a welcome addition, the provided connectivity options suffice for most users.
Features
The EF-21’s standout feature is its built-in Google TV, offering access to over 400,000 movies and TV episodes through apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. Setting up Google TV was straightforward, though time-intensive, taking roughly 30 minutes. Navigation through the interface was occasionally slow, but the built-in Chromecast made content casting from smartphones or laptops seamless. Additionally, Google Assistant integration allowed for voice control, enhancing convenience.
The automatic keystone correction and autofocus features were highlights, making setup a breeze. The projector quickly adjusted the image to fit the screen and even corrected keystone distortions when moved. The obstacle avoidance feature was a thoughtful touch, preventing the light from blinding users by detecting and adjusting for objects in its path.
Manual adjustments for keystone and focus are also available through the included remote control, which features dedicated buttons for brightness, input selection, and popular streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video.
The EF-21 also includes a Bluetooth speaker mode, enabling the projector’s speakers to function independently. This feature adds versatility, allowing the device to double as a standalone Bluetooth speaker for music or podcasts.
Performance
Powered by Epson’s 3LCD technology, the EF-21 delivers a brightness of 1,000 lumens and a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1. The Full HD resolution produces sharp and vivid images with impressive color accuracy, especially in dimly lit environments. However, its brightness struggles in rooms with strong ambient light, making it best suited for evening use or darkened spaces.
During testing, we projected a 100-inch display, although the EF-21 can handle screen sizes up to 150 inches. While the image quality was satisfactory for casual movie nights, the projector’s HDR performance lacked the vibrancy and contrast depth seen in higher-end models. Colors were generally accurate but less vibrant than a good-quality TV. Despite these limitations, the EF-21 delivers a solid viewing experience for most users.
Gaming on the EF-21 was enjoyable, although the 60Hz refresh rate and Full HD resolution might not satisfy competitive gamers seeking ultra-smooth visuals. For casual gaming, however, the projector performed adequately.
The built-in speakers produced acceptable sound quality, though they’re no match for an external sound system. Using a soundbar or dedicated speakers is recommended for a more immersive experience.
Portability and Limitations
While the EF-21 is marketed as portable, its lack of a built-in battery makes it reliant on nearby power outlets. This limitation reduces its true portability, especially for outdoor use.
Another drawback is the slow performance of the built-in Google TV interface at times. While it’s functional, navigating menus and launching apps can be frustratingly slow. For smoother performance, connecting an external streaming device like a Chromecast is a viable workaround.
Conclusion
The Epson EF-21 strikes a balance between affordability, design, and performance. Its laser light source, rated for up to 10 years of daily use, ensures longevity and low maintenance.
